Let’s be real, the holidays are exhausting. Between parties, shopping and all the carols in between, it’s hard to enjoy the season of cheer. But don’t stress because entertaining during the holidays can be fun and easy. As part of our 3rd annual 31 Days of Cheer, baking-expert Jenna Larsson of Butter Loves Company is sharing her top six tips for holiday entertaining and hosting. So enjoy the season of cheer and some holiday inspiration below!
Hi there! Jenna here, blogger behind Butter Loves Company, knee deep in cookie dough, blasting Christmas music, and excited to share some holiday entertaining tips and tricks for keeping the season merry, bright, and stress-free!
Whether you’re hosting a cookie swap with friends, dinner with family, or a brunch somewhere in between, here are ideas to spice up traditions or give you “planning-peace-of-mind” so you can focus on the important part of the holiday: spending time with those you love.
Make Everyone Feel Special with Mailed Invitations
These days, we’re often laser-focused on computer or phones screens during the day, so what better way to set up your event to feel like a special occasion than by kicking it off “offline” with gorgeous mailed invitations. Use boxed holiday cards to not only send well wishes, but also to invite your friends and loved ones to celebrate with you.
Make a Drink Station
Preparing a mimosa bar with juices and bubbly, or a cocoa bar with hot chocolate and all the fixin’s—Marshmallows, peppermint, sprinkles, you’re all invited!—will set the tone for guests to serve themselves when they arrive, and thus, feel at home! Meanwhile, you’ll be able to mingle all the way through the party without the worry of needing to fill everyone’s glass. I love PAPYRUS’ selection of festive products for everything from giftings to entertaining. These “Snow Days Mugs” are so cute for the holidays and beyond with little skiers and skaters to join you on the couch when the flurries are falling.
Label Your Platters in Advance
My mom is a huge entertainer and one of the best pieces of advice she has given me is to label all of your plates and platters in advance of the party. When you know exactly what recipe will go on which plate, and where you plan to serve them, moving things from oven to table is a cinch. Jotting the dish name on a little tear of paper works great. I can’t wait to serve bagels and lox on the Faithful Friends Platter this year for our annual holiday brunch!
Cookies, Cookies, Cookies
Cookies are synonymous with the holiday season and are perfect for every aspect of entertaining. They are:
- Make-ahead: You can prep the dough and freeze it, often up to a month in advance. How about that for stress-free hosting? I absolutely love this PAPYRUS Snow Days Rolling Pin that says “Dashing Through the Dough.” How cute!
- Both dessert and party favors: Set out a platter of cookies during the party and little to-go bags when things are wrapping up. Guests will love to have a nibble on hand for their trip home.
- Crowd pleasers: When you’re entertaining a group, you may encounter people who don’t love chocolate or don’t love white chocolate. Cookies are the perfect dessert to please everyone since you can make a few kinds and let them nosh on their favorites!
Turn It Up!
Have you ever walked into a room, restaurant or store and thought, hmm something feels off? Often times it is a lack of music! Bring the cheer by queuing up a holiday playlist from your favorite music app. You’ll be surprised how quickly song requests and singing starts.
Relax and Have Fun!
Mostly importantly, don’t worry! The holidays can be filled with so many emotions but entertaining should be something to cheers about. If a recipes goes wrong or you don’t have time to decorate, don’t sweat it. 🙂
