Founded in 1950 as an importer of European paper products, the company is now comprised of a dynamic family of retail brands, including PAPYRUS, American Greetings, Carlton Cards, Paper Thread, as well as NIQUEA.D and PAPER DESTINY. Together, these divisions offer the marketplace and consumers a diverse and ever-expanding array of products including greeting cards, gift wrap, gift bags, stationery, note cards, journals, unique gift products, and custom printed stationery, invitations, and announcements for all occasions.
Over the course of a rich history, the company has been a publisher, wholesaler, franchisor and retailer as the business evolved through various phases in its journey. Today, under the leadership of Dominique Schurman, Schurman Retail Group continues to grow and flourish, and is celebrated as a pillar in the social expression industry. PAPYRUS is the flagship brand of Schurman Retail Group and was founded in the family kitchen of Marcel and Margrit Schurman in 1950. The couple named their stores after the earliest form of paper crafted from the papyrus plant. Inspired by a love of fine art, the Schurmans had a vision for products of uncompromising quality which provided the starting point from which genuine personal connections are made. That tradition continues today with products and objects of beauty presented in an inviting gallery-style setting.
1950 Company founded by Marcel and Margrit Schurman as an importer and wholesaler of fine greeting cards and stationery.
1965 - 1989 Company facility in Oakland, California, housed warehouse product, packaging and all administrative departments. The original facility in Emeryville was lost to a fire in 1965.
1973 PAPYRUS was established in Berkeley as the first retail store.
1982 Dominique Schurman joined the company, working in many capacities before being named CEO.
2004 PAPYRUS store systems totaled 140 stores with major presence in all key metro markets.
2009 Company acquires Carlton Card Retail and sells wholesale division to American Greetings. Schurman Retail Group is established.
2010 Carlton Lux by PAPYRUS is launched.
2011 PAPYRUS launches new "Cherry Blossom" prototype in three locations and also launches NIQUEA.D, a lifestyle brand for women. PAPYRUS launches in Canada, opening its first store in Calgary, Alberta.
